I'm Capt. James Duncan III
I was born into a fishing family, so I’ve been around boats and the water my whole life. As soon as I could walk, my dad had me casting lines behind our house in Point Pleasant, NJ, and I’d spend hours perfecting my cast. When my family moved to South Florida, it opened up a whole new world for me—one where I could be on or near the water every chance I got.
As a teenager, I started working at a marina on the fuel dock, which led to a job as a mate on private boats and charters. From there, I spent several years as a captain running a corporate sportfishing program, competing in Marlin tournaments up and down the east coast. After running a successful sportfishing charter in New Jersey, I realized that Islamorada was where I truly felt at home. Fishing has always been my passion, and from a young age, I’ve known this is the path I was meant to take.
I am a lifelong sportfisherman that has earned a reputation for being easygoing, patient, and adaptable. I love taking everyone out and showing them the beautiful waters of Islamorada, from hardcore fishing groups to families looking to get out for a fun day on the water.
Our Backcountry Boat
Actioncraft 1820
Backcountry fishing trips with Bug Sportfishing take place on an Actioncraft 1082 - a perfect flats boat for our waters. The Actioncraft is fully outfitted for any type of backcountry fishing opportunity we could come across with brand new, top of the line electronics. This boat allows us to tarpon fish in the heavy current around bridges or get back in the very skinny water fishing for snook or reds.
